The brand name of acrylic colours you could consider: Golden, Liquitex, & Stevenson's

Lemon yellow, Cadmium yellow medium,
Cadmium red medium, Alizarin Crimson, Quinacridone Burnt Orange
Ultramarine blue, Thalo blue, Cerulean blue, Antraquinone Blue

3 surfaces with texture (over the whole surface) of your choice prepared in advance
Tools:

Brush sizes vary from #2 rigger to 4” wide flat with long Taklon or other synthetic bristle. Hog hair brushes are not suitable.

breyers 3” or 3.5” wide (Speedball printing breyers are preffered for this workshop)

Water media disposable palette Water containers
Cleaning soap for brushes or Murphy’s Oil Soap, paper towels, Kleenex,
Optional:
Any textural acrylic or material such as tissue paper, acrylic gel, modeling paste, plastic netting gauze or such materials with which you wish to experiment should be used to produce textural surface ahead of time or after the first class at home in order for surface to dry in time. For expediency of image making textural surfaces should be prepared at home and brought ready to paint.
Reference material such as: your own photos and sketches, prepared in advance.
No Reference material will be available from instructor.
Creativity & Collage Workshop
with Instructor Janice Tayler
Many interesting effects can be achieved by using mixed media. Often, found objects are used in conjunction with traditional artist media, such as paints and graphite, to express a meaning in the everyday life. In this manner, many different elements of art become more flexible than with traditional artist media.
Materials Needed:
•Resource materials of particular interest, examples: magazines, newspapers, art papers, fabrics, post cards, earth, sand, sawdust, rice or any small grain.
•Acrylic paints (red, yellow, blue, black and white) or other colors of student’s choice and/or set of colored pastels or colored pencils, student’s preference.
•1 or 2 brushes, large and small, palette knife
•Small bottle of acrylic gesso or gel medium and acrylic gloss medium
•Palette (tin pie plate or cookie sheet, or throw away palettes)
•2 pieces of canvas pad paper or canvas boards (9 x 12) for preliminary work and a large stretched canvas or board (14 x 11, 16 x 19, 24 x 12) or larger for final piece.
•Students are encouraged to bring additional artistic materials to class such as set of markers and pens.
. Instructor will also provide additional resource materials when possible.
OIL with COLD WAX: CONTEMPORARY PAINTING
with Instructor Janice Mason Steeves
5 or more wood painting panels. I prefer the ones made of birch ply with sides that are roughly 1 ½” deep. You can buy these at Curry’s Art Stores.
Sizes: your choice depending on personal preference. Small (12” square) or slightly larger panels are fine, up to 24x24”.
You could also use 12” square masonite panels.
Apply at least three coats of gesso over the surface. Lightly sand between layers.
Tape the edges with green masking tape.
-Cold Wax Medium-comes in 4oz., 16 oz and 1 gallon jars.
I use Dorland’s Wax Medium (Available at Curry’s Oakville)
You can also use Gamblin Cold Wax Medium, which is available at Wyndham Art Supplies in Guelph and Above Ground Art supplies and Woolfitt’s in Toronto although I find it more grainy and thicker in consistency. It is easily available though.
-Assortment of oil paints (see below)
-Squeegee or Colour Shaper (see below)
-4” soft rubber brayer (I use the speedball brand)
-1 or 2 palette knives
-Cotton rags (LOTS)..cut up t-shirts or buy rags at a hardware store. Not flannel.
-Roll of paper towels
-Brushes- one or two soft pointed ones, or even some old ones that are worn out.
-Masking tape-the green kind that is easily removable for the edges of your panels, wide enough to cover the edges.
-Latex or vinyl gloves or protective cream for hands
-Paper Palette-12x16 or larger or freezer paper
-Apron
-Newspapers or newsprint
-objects to use for creating texture (see below)
-small container odourless mineral spirits
-bottle of baby oil for cleaning up…great for cleaning brushes and rollers and hands.
-freezer paper to place between paintings to transport them home
OIL PAINTS:
Bring 10 or 12 of your favourite paints-include transparent, opaque, dark, light, warm and cool colours. Recommended: Zinc White, Titanium White, Alizarin Crimson, Transparent Iron Oxide, Raw Sienna, French Ultramarine Blue, Indian Yellow.
OPTIONAL
One or two oil paint sticks (oil paint in stick form..not pastels) R&F Encaustic or Kama Pigments are good.
PALETTE KNIVES:
Bring at least one palette knife. (or more if you have them). Try the trowel (offset) blade and the flat ones.
FOR TEXTURING:
To make textures in the oil/wax surface, bring along various implements and objects to create textures, such as, combs, a whisk broom, wooden BBQ skewers for drawing into the wax, string, netting, mesh, anything you can think of that would make an interesting texture. Fabric with a heavy, raised texture works well…try upholstery fabric.
A Comprehensive Approach to Landscape Painting in Oil
with Instructor Harold Frontz
- Drawing paper or sketchpads at least 6”X 8” and 80 pounds weight (I suggest Strathmore brand).
- Assorted sizes of small canvases or canvas boards for painting (e.g., 6”X8”, 8”X10”, 9”X12” and 11”X14”). I suggest smaller sizes as students will be practicing techniques, not necessarily trying to complete finished paintings.
- An assortment of drawing pencils 2B through 6B.
- A quality soft eraser.
- Pencil sharpener.
- Oil painting kit (may be oil-based or water-based oils). I strongly suggest that students do not use student-grade paints (e.g., Winton, Academy, Georgian, etc.). My suggested list of basic colors include a warm and a cool of the primary colors, three convenience colors and white as follows:
- Ultramarine Blue Cerulean Blue
- Cadmium Red Deep Cadmium Red Medium
- Cadmium Yellow Light Cadmium Lemon
- Yellow Ochre Cadmium Orange
- Veridian Titanium White
I have found that Windsor-Newton paints are very serviceable for most painting courses.
- Brushes (#2, #4, #6, #8 and a rigger brush for calligraphy). The student may choose the brush type they are most comfortable with or an assortment of each type (i.e., filbert, flat, or bright). I suggest bristle brushes rather than nylon. Note that rigger brushes are typically made from an inexpensive hair or synthetic fiber.
- Odorless paint solvent.
- Paper towels.
- A ruler at least 12” long.
- Several photographs of landscape subjects that include trees, water, clouds, and ground planes for painting references. Note: we will also paint outside if the weather permits.
- L-shaped paper or cardboard croppers.
- Easel (if not provided by the workshop organizer).
- Pad of paper for taking notes.
- Binoculars to assist with viewing demonstrations.
Old frames to place completed paintings in.
